KGC Ginseng Corporation’s ‘Hongsamwon’ Surpasses 100 Billion KRW in Annual Sales, Driven by Overseas Growth
KGC Ginseng Corporation’s flagship health drink brand, Hongsamwon, achieved annual sales of 103.2 billion KRW in 2024, surpassing the 100 billion KRW milestone for the first time in its 36-year history. Notably, international sales exceeded domestic sales, with overseas revenue reaching 55.5 billion KRW, compared to 47.7 billion KRW from the domestic market.
First launched in 1988, Hongsamwon is a premium Korean red ginseng beverage, blending deep, rich ginseng flavor with cinnamon, jujube, ginger, and goji berries. The product is currently exported to over 20 countries worldwide. The company’s global expansion strategy has played a crucial role in its success, with sales increasing by 158% in China, 144% in Southeast Asia, 122% in Japan, and 116% in the United States compared to the previous year.
China & Southeast Asia: Key Markets Driving Growth
In China, Korean red ginseng—known as “Goryeo-sam”—is highly regarded. To cater to local consumers, KGC introduced seven different variations of Hongsamwon and saw significant sales growth, particularly in Guangdong Province, a major economic hub.
Southeast Asia has also emerged as a strong market. Since 2018, KGC has been exporting halal-certified Hongsamwon products, securing placements in major health and beauty retail chains such as Guardian and Watsons in Malaysia and Singapore. This strategic expansion has led to a substantial increase in demand.
Japan & U.S.: Market-Specific Trends
In Japan, Hongsamwon Plus, a higher-concentration red ginseng drink, is particularly popular among women in their 40s who seek fatigue management solutions. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Hongsamwon has gained traction as a caffeine-free premium energy drink, especially among men in their 30s.
KGC Ginseng Corporation first entered Costco USA in 2015, and Hongsamwon is now available in over 140 Costco stores across the country. Additionally, online sales through platforms like Amazon and eBay have significantly contributed to its growth.
