In March 2025, KGC (Korea Ginseng Corporation), the company behind the renowned CheongKwanJang brand, received the prestigious Varro E. Tyler Award from the American Botanical Council (ABC) during the Natural Product Expo West (NPEW) in Anaheim, California. This award honors KGC’s long-standing contribution to the scientific validation of red ginseng’s health benefits, and its role in advancing the global credibility of herbal healthcare.
Named after Dr. Varro E. Tyler, a former dean of Purdue University and a leading herbal medicine authority, the award is annually granted to organizations or individuals who have significantly contributed to natural product research and public education. The ABC, a respected U.S.-based nonprofit, brings together scientists and institutions worldwide to promote safe and evidence-based use of botanical ingredients.
KGC stood out for its consistent R&D investments in red ginseng and other health ingredients. Through years of advanced clinical and laboratory research, KGC’s scientific teams have successfully demonstrated key health benefits of red ginseng—immune system support, improved blood circulation, and fatigue reduction—leading to official recognition from Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
In 2023, KGC researchers achieved another milestone by scientifically proving red ginseng’s benefits in blood sugar control. The results were published in the international peer-reviewed journal Medicine, showing red ginseng could help pre-diabetic adults manage glucose levels without adverse effects. This supports growing global interest in red ginseng as a natural functional food for chronic disease prevention.
Moreover, KGC’s work has expanded into men’s health. Red ginseng oil was recognized for its positive effects on prostate health, and a botanical blend including Eucommia ulmoides and Achyranthes bidentata was officially approved for supporting male hormonal balance during aging. These were certified by MFDS as individually approved functional ingredients, underlining the company’s leadership in functional herbal innovation.
To accelerate global research efforts, KGC operates two overseas R&D centers—one in Shanghai since 2013 and another established in Los Angeles in 2023. These facilities focus on tailoring red ginseng-based solutions to local markets while contributing to international health science.
According to Dr. Seungho Lee, Head of Natural Products Research at KGC, “Receiving the Varro E. Tyler Award from a globally respected institution validates decades of effort in proving that K-Ginseng is more than a traditional remedy—it's a scientifically backed health solution. We’re committed to leading the global health supplement market through evidence-based development.”
With over 290 peer-reviewed papers, 200 registered patents, and 15 protected ginseng varieties, KGC remains a pioneer in the global functional food sector. The award reinforces its role as a scientific ambassador of Korean red ginseng and a reliable innovator in the field of herbal healthcare.
